Google is clearly trying to get more people to switch to Pixel 10, as the company has just launched a new “Head Start” tool that walks users through the process of moving into their new phone. Over the past several years, Android’s tools for transferring data from one phone to another have improved drastically. In many cases, a user can swap from one phone to another in a matter of 15-30 minutes, but there are parts that can take a while if you’ve not already started using them. That’s where Google’s new “Head Start” plays a role in preparing users for their new Pixel 10. A link shown during the purchase of a Pixel 10 from the Google Store and also sent to the user over email brings users to the “Pixel Head Start” tool. Google teased this last week, but details weren’t clear. On iPhone, the tool walks users through syncing their photos and videos, as well as saving all of the passwords on their device. Users are told to download Google Photos and run a full backup, and then to export their passwords from Safari over to Google Password Manager. Once those two steps are complete, the tool tells the user to have a cable on hand for when their new phone arrives and offers a broad overview of what data can be transferred via that cable, saying that “you’ll finish setup and transferring your data when your Pixel arrives.” The final page also links out to various guides and overviews of Pixel basics and features. On Android, the tool does the same thing, but can leverage your Google account to see if Android’s backup options are already enabled. If they are, it simply says “that’s all for now.” It’s a nice little touch for new Pixel switchers, but it doesn’t really take away that much friction, especially as it remains unclear if this is available beyond the Google Store. In any case, it’s always good to see Google take a step towards improving the transfer process.
