With James Gunn’s Superman movie out into the world, DC fans are abuzz over Matt Reeves’ long-awaited The Batman Part II. Although the film has suffered numerous delays that even worried actor Robert Pattinson, its script is complete, and filming is slated to begin next spring. To add to the already fever-pitch of anticipation for the sequel to The Batman, its writer is confident that the second installment will best what came before it.
In a social media interaction with a fan asking if The Batman Part II would top its 2022 predecessor, co-writer Mattson Tomlin replied: “The only worthwhile reason to make a sequel to anything is because there’s a story burning to be told that you believe can top what came before.” Tomlin, who ended his post with a smiley face emoji, got a lot of replies, mostly from fans posting gifs encapsulating their excitement.

Tomlin isn’t the only insider to have weighed in on The Batman Part II. Back in July, Gunn told Screen Rant that he’d read the script, saying simply, “It’s great!” Gunn recently had to go to bat for Reeves (pun intended), trying to calm fans who were pestering Reeves about the script’s status, and squashing rumors about which villains or heroes might appear. Chief among them: Gunn shut down a rumor that Robin would appear in The Batman Part II.
“Guys please stop believing this nonsense,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “I think six of us have read the script. No one knows anything about the Batman 2.”
While DC Studios has tried to keep the scripting hush hush, even to the film’s actors, that hasn’t stopped the cast from professing their faith that Tomlin and Reeves can make another worthy addition to the Batman canon.
Back in August, The Penguin star Colin Farrell revealed to TheWrap that he was about to read the script (meaning he’s likely done so by now). While Farrell said he doesn’t have many scenes, he voiced his faith that the movie would be great, partly because Reeves takes such a “meticulous” approach to his craft.
“Matt Reeves is so brilliant. I don’t know what the story is yet. I just know that obviously Matt has slaved for a few years now to really make something special,” Farrell said. “And he holds a very high bar for himself. He’s so meticulous; he cares so deeply about what he does.”
Likewise, James Gordon actor Jeffrey Wright also chimed in, telling Den of Geek that, although he hadn’t read the script yet, he was hearing promising things about it as well.
“I’m liking what I’m hearing,” Wright said. “And I have huge respect for Matt’s Gotham-building skills. So I’m excited to jump in there and read what he has, which I’m sure will be rich and satisfying to play, and ideally for audiences to take in as well.”
The Batman Part II is slated to release on October 1, 2027.
