There are a lot of big names in the cast of Tron: Ares but, really, there’s one that truly sells the movie. That’s Jeff Bridges. Bridges, of course, starred in the first Tron over 40 years ago, as well as its sequel, Tron: Legacy, 15 years ago. His character, Kevin Flynn, is the key to everything that has happened in this story, and while Tron: Ares doesn’t seem to be about him, the fact he’s in it at all is a major selling point. That’s why we really enjoyed this new trailer released by Disney. It’s heavy on Bridges, though much of that comes in via footage from the first two movies. There is a bit of new stuff from this movie, out October 10, but we’re guessing he’s not in it that much. Nevertheless, his presence gives the film a connective tissue and gravitas that has us more excited about this movie than almost anything else. Here’s the new trailer for Tron: Ares that is light on new footage but heavy on nostalgia. As we reported in our set visit report (have you read it yet? It’s chock full of goodies!) at a certain point in the movie, Ares (played by Jared Leto) has to go back to the original 1982 Tron grid to learn something that forwards the story. We get a new glimpse of that here, and it appears that’s where Flynn now lives. But is it actually Flynn? At the end of Tron: Legacy, we thought we watched Flynn die as he destroyed his digital double Clu to save his son, Sam. So, who or what is this version? How much time has passed? How can he help? All interesting questions that, unfortunately, probably have very little to do with the actual plot of Tron: Ares. The actual plot is covered in the second half of this trailer, a battle over how to bring elements from the Grid into the real world. And the success of Ares will ultimately rest more on that story working rather than the film’s links to the previous two. But we like to geek out around here. Are you excited for Tron: Ares?
