Apple has been building toward Declarative Device Management for a few years, but at WWDC 2025 earlier this summer, it became clear that the transition is over. DDM is not a future concept or an option for Apple fleets. It is now how Apple expects organizations to manage updates, apps, and policies across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Vision Pro. This is a technical and mental change and a vendor litmus test for IT teams. If your device management provider is not fully committed to DDM, Apple just gave you a reason to start planning your transition and the tools to do so. About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers managed an enterprise IT network from 2009 to 2021. Through his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, a device management system, enterprise grade Wi-Fi, 1000s of Macs, and 1000s of iPads, Bradley highlights how Apple IT managers deploy devices, build networks to support them, train users, share stories from the trenches, and ways Apple could improve its products for IT departments. DDM reaches its final form Feedback from IT teams has been strong as Apple has moved essential device-to-management communication to DDM. At WWDC 25, Apple extended those same controls to Apple TV and Vision Pro, completing the transition across every platform. With DDM, IT admins can manage update cadences, deadlines, and deferrals consistently across the fleet in a reliable way. The older MDM based software update system is now deprecated. It will continue to work for a while, but Apple said it will be removed in future releases. Safari management also moved into DDM with declarative controls for bookmarks and the default homepage. Settings that were previously spread across restrictions are now consolidated. The message is clear. DDM is how Apple expects device management to work, and new features will center on it. Migration without disruption Device management migration is the other headline for this fall. Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager now support a built-in flow to move devices between management services. IT admins can reassign devices, set a deadline, and guide users through the process. When configured correctly, apps and app data can be preserved. The new service can assume Activation Lock, rotate the FileVault key using the bootstrap token, and install new configurations while old ones are removed. For many organizations, this migration service will allow much more flexibility with the vendor they choose for device management. Wrap up Apple is saying DDM is the present, and if your vendor has not built out support for it yet, it is time to migrate. Pairing migration with DDM makes sense. Apple cannot expect IT teams to handle painful manual transitions when some vendors are slow to keep pace. The company gave IT both the justification and the tools to make a move.
