We’re in the endgame now for Peacemaker‘s season 2 finale, and its latest episode finally lifted the lid on a huge twist that head honcho James Gunn wanted to keep under wraps for DC fans. No, not that thing, the other thing. The “what the hell is going on with Christopher Smith’s pocket universe?” Evidently, Gunn has been lording that big reveal in fans’ faces every week without them noticing by hiding that plot development in an unlikely place: Peacemaker‘s opening dance number. So, everyone and their mom pretty much clocked that there was something up with Chris’ pocket universe. Sure, his dad and brother are alive, and he’s celebrated as the hero that the Justice Gang denied him the chance to become. Still, fans felt that something was bubbling underneath the surface that the show would eventually reveal as the big trouble in Chris’ paradise: there are no people of color. Whether on Twitter, BlueSky, Reddit, or TikTok, fans quickly caught on to the fact that the background extras in Peacemaker‘s alternate dimension, which the show painstakingly highlighted more than usual, didn’t have a single person of color in its numerous crowd shots. It turns out that Chris’ dad, Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick), being a super villain and Ku Klux Klan leader, carried over into the pocket dimension in the worst way possible, with him and his sons becoming the hero trio to an America with a Nazi symbol woven into its flag: a nod to Earth X from the comics, an alternate reality where Nazi Germany prolonged and ultimately won World War II. Shortly after fans slept on feeling smart, having their Eagly-eyed sleuthing manifest in Peacemaker‘s sixth episode, they woke up with the stark realization that Gunn has been galavanting this plot revelation by putting it smack dab in Peacemaker’s catchy-ass opening every damn week. So, Peacemaker season 2’s opening theme features the cast performing a cool, sequenced dance, with the only apparent difference being that it is underscored by Foxy Shazam’s “Oh Lord.” It’s great and has the same campy energy as its previous opening, but it starts by having John Cena stare directly down the barrel of the camera before flailing his arms around, triggering the rest of the cast to join in. However, fans online have noticed that Cena’s arm movements seem intentional; for a brief moment, they resemble a Nazi symbol before the rest of the crew joins in. Understandably, people’s minds are blown at the idea that Gunn seemingly managed to hide this lampshade in plain sight until the endgame of the season. Now, could it be a coincidence that Cena’s giant hamhock arms, dancing in a formation that resembles a Nazi symbol, were a plot hinting at an Easter egg for where the consequential DC Studios TV show was headed? Perhaps, but considering we live in a reality where a wealthy man-child often jumps into the air like a buffoon, exaggerating his body into an X shape to promote his poorly rebranded social media logo—while also throwing a “Roman Salute” in 4K—we believe that Gunn is clever enough to tease that Nazis are what lies inside the mystery box for Peacemaker season 2. And to have the temerity to make it clear that Nazis and racists suck.
