Various devices would run Linux-based Vega OS instead of Android-based FireOS. The change won't happen immediately and is likely to start with new devices. Amazon Fire TV devices are convenient, but their interface is among the least user-friendly I've tested. While Amazon has worked to improve its FireOS with frequent updates, the company is reportedly working on releasing a proprietary operating system called Vega OS that could enhance the user experience. This new operating system could be announced as early as next week during the Amazon Devices and Services event, which kicks off Tuesday, September 30. New Fire TV hardware could feature Vega OS before the end of the year, according to journalist Janko Roettgers. The JavaScript-based framework could theoretically simplify application development, yet Amazon reportedly is struggling to get app developers on board with the new system. Years in the planning Though the e-commerce giant is reportedly in talks with major publishers to integrate their apps into Vega OS, moving away from an Android-based system means developers need to adjust to building an application on a different framework. Reports of a new operating system to replace the Android-based FireOS first surfaced in 2023, though Roettgers believes the company has been working on it since as early as 2019. "The Prime Video Fire TV organization is seeking an engineering leader that will help in building a Vega OS product that will delight customers worldwide," the listing stated. "The team is responsible for the dedicated Prime Video app on Vega OS, as well as all PV experiences on the Vega Launcher. With the app launching in 2025, you will get to shape the future of this product as well as the culture of the team." For now, Vega OS is only expected to run on new Fire TV devices, which means Amazon will continue to support Android-based FireOS for some time. Third-party Fire TV manufacturers will continue to make and sell FireOS TVs, and Vega isn't expected to come to all Fire Tablets just yet, either. Many of the latest Fire Tablets, including the 2023 Fire Max 11 and 2024 Fire Kids Tablet 8 Pro, run on a Fire OS version based on Android 11, which was released in 2020. At Amazon's Devices and Services event in New York, the company is expected to announce new Fire TV and Echo devices and, potentially, new Kindle and smart home products.
