Twenty years after the release of the original, a new Simpsons movie is coming to theaters on July 23, 2027. That’s kind of all we know at the moment, but 20th Century Fox announced the news with a poster on social media, which you can see here. The Simpsons Movie was released on July 27, 2007, and told the story of the family’s hometown of Springfield being covered in a dome. It was a major hit, grossing over $500 million worldwide, which immediately had people talking about a sequel. But, as you can tell, producers and creators took their time, instead concentrating on continuing the long-running TV series. That series has been running since late 1989 and just began its 37th season. The year 2027 would put it close to its 40th season, and you have to wonder, is this movie the end? The culmination of (by then) well over 800 episodes of television? We don’t know now but you have to assume that there is a reason this movie is coming on the 20th anniversary of the original film, besides the symmetry of it. Also, after almost 40 years of existence, what could The Simpsons do next that would necessitate a big-screen story? What new, wild, massive adventure could we see them go on? We can now safely start to speculate. There’s also the question of whether The Simpsons will still be a big-screen draw in 2027? They’ve been timeless for a long, long time, and there’s no reason that would stop in two years but, still, it feels like much more of a gamble now than it did in 2007. Discuss all this and more below. When we have more info on the movie, we’ll let you know.
