Yesterday Bloomberg reported that Apple’s ‘Vision Air’ product is being paused so resources can be shifted to the high priority Apple Glasses product. Also noteworthy from that report was a key detail on Apple’s planned launch strategy for the new glasses product. Apple Glasses will reportedly be unveiled next year, but not ship until 2027 Most of the time, when Apple introduces a new product, it becomes available to purchase either immediately or very shortly afterwards. This is how the company handles the vast majority of its launches. Perhaps driven by Apple’s culture of secrecy, it typically won’t unveil a product until it’s ready to ship. However, on rare occasions that pattern is deviated from and there’s a longer gap between a product’s introduction and its availability. It sounds like Apple Glasses could prove the next example of that seldom-deployed launch strategy. Mark Gurman writes at Bloomberg: Apple aims to unveil this model as soon as next year, ahead of a release in 2027, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters. Earlier this year, Gurman expected Apple Glasses to actually release in 2026. But now it seems the plan is instead for a two-stage rollout: Product unveiling in 2026 Product release in 2027 Apple’s history with two-stage product launches The last time Apple utilized this staggered release strategy was with Apple Vision Pro. Vision Pro debuted in June 2023 at WWDC but didn’t ship until early 2024. Similar two-stage rollouts were used for the original HomePod and Apple Watch. With brand new product categories, Apple sometimes favors this strategy. But since entirely new product categories are pretty rare, so too is the presence of long gaps between products being revealed and shipping. Sometimes a staggered launch is helpful because it gives developers more time to build apps for a brand new platform. But other times, like with the HomePod, Apple seemingly offers product previews as a way to silence growing criticism over it “falling behind” in a given area. Clearly a lot can still change in Apple’s plans before the Apple Glasses are unveiled, but for the time being at least, it sounds like we could see the product debut as early as WWDC 2026—even if it doesn’t ship until 2027.
