If you use Threads, you’ve probably seen topic tags, which users can add to posts when they want to reach more people interested in that same subject.
Today, Meta is combining topic tags with its custom feeds feature, and rolling out communities as a worldwide beta. Here’s how it works.
100+ communities now available
Since Threads came out, users have been referring to “book Threads,” or “TV threads” as a way to describe topic-based groups. Now, Threads is embracing this naming trend with communities, which are public feeds of interest-based topics.
From the feature’s press release:
“Today, we’re introducing communities on Threads. Communities are public, casual spaces where you can exchange unique perspectives and join conversations about topics like basketball, TV, and more. Communities, now being tested across more than 100 of the most popular topics on Threads, build on features like custom feeds and topic tags to help you meaningfully connect with people who share your interests.”
Some of the new communities include:
AI Threads
Art Threads
Book Threads
Cats of Threads
Design Threads
Dogs of Threads
F1 Threads
Fashion Threads
Gaming Threads
Hiking Threads
KPop Threads
MMA Threads
Music Threads
NBA Threads
NFL Threads
Photographers of Threads
Tech Threads
TV Threads
WNBA Threads
To celebrate the launch, Threads’ new lead, Connor Hayes, is joining and posting in NBA Threads, NFL Threads, and TV Threads.
One interesting touch is that each community has its own custom Like emoji, which Threads says adds “a distinct sense of belonging to interactions between members.”
You can find communities via the Search tool, or across your timeline, as marked by blue topic tags. Once you join a community, it will appear alongside your custom feeds on the app’s top left menu. They also appear on your profile page, within the recently launched interests section.
Threads also says that in the future, community builders will get special profile badges, as a way to recognize the engagement and time they invest in the app. Threads also plans to expand the post ranking feature beyond communities, bringing it to the For You feed.
Which communities are you joining? Let us know in the comments.
