An Android tablet that's actually good at $250

When ZDNET contributor Jason Cipriani reviewed the Pixel Tablet in 2023, he said, "Android tablets typically all suffer from the same set of issues. The biggest one is that there's an obvious lack of apps in the Play Store with support for a larger display. And the apps that aren't optimized for a tablet are just giant phone apps that look horrible on the tablet's display." This still stands true.
While the Google tablet didn't solve all of these issues, it made some key improvements to the Android tablet experience. Many mainstream apps were first optimized with the launch of Pixel Tablet. If you want a big-screen Android device that would load your most-used apps in tablet mode, the Google Pixel Tablet can do this.
Moreover, if you spend on a Charging Speaker Dock, you can convert the Pixel Tablet into a smart home hub. This is one of the features I loved about the Google tablet, and I'm bummed that the industry hasn't adopted the idea. The dock offers a good speaker, which increases the total volume and bass.

When docked, the Pixel Tablet goes into Hub Mode and displays a screen saver of your choice. Unlike other smart home devices like the Google Nest Hub and the Amazon Echo Hub, the Pixel Tablet is a portable device, so you can pick up the screen and take it with you anywhere you want.
In her article, ZDNET staff writer Maria Diaz wrote, "I've taken mine to my kids' after-school activities to play or watch something while I wait. Having a multipurpose display at the center of a smart home is like having two tablets in one."
You can also Cast content from your phone to the Pixel Tablet when it's docked, just like you would a Nest smart display or a Chromecast device. While the smart hub experience isn't the best, it is a nice-to-have feature. I wish Amazon had allowed the new Echo Show 11 or Show 8 to have a portable screen to double as a tablet.
