Chromebooks are a dime a dozen, but precious few of them are actually worth recommending. The Asus CX15 is a rare exception. It’s one of the best Chromebooks you can buy, not only because it offers decent performance and battery life, but also because it’s dirt cheap. And during Amazon's fall Prime Big Deals Day, it’s down to its lowest price ever.
You’ll spend just $229 on it, which is 15 percent off its $270 list price, and nearly $80 cheaper than the laptop’s peak price. When you’re dealing with a Chromebook under $500 and closer to $250, there are some necessary compromises, and the CX15 isn’t above them. The display isn’t very bright, and the keyboard and trackpad need some work. But that price is hard to argue with.
You can find the CX15 for less, but only with 4 GB of RAM. This model that’s on sale for Prime Day has 8 GB of RAM, which is a big upgrade, even for a budget Chromebook. I don’t need to tell anyone who’s opened a dozen browser tabs on a 4 GB laptop just how miserable the experience is. With this Prime Day deal it's well worth the extra money for those extra gigabytes of RAM.
That extra 4 GB of memory is what makes the difference for the CX15. The Intel Core Celeron N4500 chip isn’t the most powerful, but it’s still enough for browsing and the lightweight, web-based apps available on Chromebooks. And although the screen isn’t the brightest, it still comes with a 1080p resolution that looks sharp on the 15.6-inch display.
If you’re willing to spend a bit more, Asus also has the Chromebook Flip CX1 on sale. It comes with identical specs as the CX15, but it has a smaller 14-inch display with a touchscreen, and it’s a convertible, so you can flip the screen around and use it as a tablet.
