Theaters are still picking popcorn and chicken feathers out of their carpets, but you cannot stop A Minecraft Movie from reloading. The video game adaptation starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black earned as many headlines for its rowdy theater antics as it did for its monster box office, and Hollywood knows a crowd-pleaser when it sees one. Hence, this announcement today of more Minecraft for the masses:
Building terrain. See you in theaters July 23 2027. #Minecraft pic.twitter.com/VqJSknMh0I — Minecraft (@Minecraft) October 9, 2025
If that date rings a bell, well, that’s because just last week, The Simpsons planted a flag there for its second feature film. Will someone blink in this standoff? And will it be the project based on the mega-popular game that generated nearly a billion box-office dollars and went mega-viral earlier this year? Or the surprise sequel to the hit 2007 movie based on an animated series that’s been part of pop culture for nearly 40 years?
Time will tell, and right now we don’t know anything about the Minecraft sequel other than the date, including whether or not Jared Hess will return to direct or if the cast will return. But since they were part of the team that made the first film such a success, you have to suspect they will.
A Minecraft Movie 2, or whatever it ends up being titled, is slated to release July 23, 2027.
