With everything going on in the Alien universe, one character we all assumed to be safely retired was Ellen Ripley. Sigourney Weaver’s iconic character and star of the franchise’s first four movies had her story pretty well told at this point, and, with new stars emerging both in theaters and at home, Ripley seemed to be off the board. Or, maybe not.
Speaking at New York Comic Con, via Screen Rant, Weaver revealed that not only has she read 50 pages of a script that brings Ripley back to the franchise, but she’s also actually met with executives about it. Legendary filmmaker and Alien producer Walter Hill reportedly wrote the pages that Weaver referred to as “a very strong first 50 pages.”
“I was always like, ‘Let her rest, let her recover,'” the actress said. “But what Walter has written first of all seems so true to me. It’s about a society [that] would incarcerate someone who’s tried to help mankind but she’s a problem for them…”
She then added that fans shouldn’t necessarily get their hopes up for Ripley’s imminent return, without closing the door entirely. “I don’t know if it’s gonna happen, but I have had a meeting with Fox, or Disney, or whoever it is now,” she said.
Of course, one kind of big thing missing in this is the fact that Ellen Ripley is very well documented as being dead in the Alien universe. She was the last survivor on the Nostromo, one of three final survivors from LV-426, and then ended up on a prison planet with a queen alien in her womb, so she threw herself into a giant furnace. She returned in the next film, Alien: Resurrection, but that was set 200 years later and starred a Ripley clone.
As far as we know, Ripley never made it back to society in any significant way. She did for a little bit after being in cryosleep for 57 years but then quickly got sucked up in the trip with the Colonial Marines. So, while we do like the idea of a society trying to wrestle with this woman’s (very expensive and destructive) actions to save herself and her friends, it would almost have to be an alternate reality story. Would people buy that?
Also, while there had been talk of Ripley’s return in the past, is there room for it in a world where Alien: Earth now exists and a second film in the Alien: Romulus series, set between the events of Alien and Aliens, is coming? We don’t know. But it’s certainly very fun to speculate about.
Do you think this is an actual thing that could happen? Or are we just being overly optimistic?
