Apple has a new wave of betas ready for testing: iPadOS 26.1 beta 3 and more are now rolling out for developers. Today Apple released its latest versions of the forthcoming iOS 26.1 family of updates. iPadOS 26.1 is so far the biggest highlight for one main addition: Slide Over. Slide Over was removed from iPadOS 26 after Apple implemented its brand new windowing system. However, many users (myself included) found that the new system couldn’t replicate what Slide Over offered in iPadOS 18. Fortunately in iPadOS 26.1, Slide Over is back—but with a different feature set than before. As of last week’s beta 2, Slide Over only supported a single app at once. In iPadOS 18, you could put a whole stack of apps in Slide Over mode and easily switch between them. On the pro side, iPadOS 26.1 lets you resize the Slide Over window to a size of your choosing. Previously, you were stuck with an iPhone-sized tall, narrow window. Today’s beta 3 might introduce more Slide Over changes, such as possibly the return of support for multiple stacked apps. We’ll keep you posted on any updates we discover. Beyond iPadOS 26.1 beta 3, Apple has also released new betas for tvOS 26.1, visionOS 26.1, and the rest of its major platforms. Even though we’re only on beta 3, Apple is expected to ship its lineup of new software updates some time before the end of the month—likely in about two weeks.
