Today Apple launched its new M5 iPad Pro, which is available for pre-order now and ships next Wednesday, October 22. And just like last year’s M4 model, certain models have varying hardware specs you’ll want to be aware of.
M5 iPad Pro models vary in more than just storage
Last year when Apple debuted the M4 iPad Pro, it quietly differentiated SKUs in more ways than shoppers initially realized.
For example, if you bought a model with 1TB or 2TB of storage, you also got more RAM. But Apple didn’t publicize that initially.
This year, it’s a similar story in terms of differentiated models, but Apple is actually disclosing all the details of the M5 iPad Pro SKUs up front.
Per the company’s website, here are the specs tied to each different M5 iPad Pro model:
256GB storage : 12GB memory, M5 with 9-core CPU, 10-core GPU
: 12GB memory, M5 with 9-core CPU, 10-core GPU 512GB storage : 12GB memory, M5 with 9-core CPU, 10-core GPU
: 12GB memory, M5 with 9-core CPU, 10-core GPU 1TB storage : 16GB memory, M5 with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU
: 16GB memory, M5 with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU 2TB storage: 16GB memory, M5 with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU
As you can see, the two lower-tier storage options include only 12GB of memory and 9-core CPUs.
But if you go with a 1TB model or higher, you get a full 16GB of memory and 10-core CPU.
One other detail worth noting: just like on the M4, you can only order a nano-texture M5 iPad Pro if you opt for a 1TB version or higher.
It’s great to see Apple being fully up front about the specs you’re getting in your iPad Pro this time around. The problem with the M4 wasn’t so much having differentiated models, but rather not disclosing that up front.
