Despite still putting out a lot of sets at various price points, Lego has developed a bit of a reputation for getting a bit pricey as of late, especially as it focuses on swaths of lavish, collector-focused sets and collaborations. So it’s always a nice surprise when the toy maker puts out a fun new set that doesn’t necessarily have your wallet bracing for impact. This week Lego announced that its Speed Champions car series would be getting a little boost from Back to the Future in the form of a new version of the DeLorean (cough cough, sorry, “Time Machine From Back to the Future,” as the set is called). Clocking in at just 357 pieces, it’s a relatively small build, but it’s a great representation of the car as it appeared in the original movie and comes with two updated minifigures of Marty and Doc Brown to boot. Lego Speed Champions Time Machine From Back to the Future Gallery But perhaps the standout thing about the set is that it’s just $28 for the car and two minifigures. This is not the first time Lego has done Back to the Future: in 2013, one of the first user-created sets of what was then known as Lego CUUSOO (the series that eventually transformed into the ongoing Lego Ideas line) was a similarly scaled DeLorean that retailed for $35, but it has long since become unavailable and commands a significantly higher price on the aftermarket. In 2022, Lego revisited the DeLorean on a much grander scale for the Lego Icons line, which still remains available for purchase. With 1,872 pieces, it was much more lavish and larger than minifigure scale and could even be tweaked to make versions of the car from the sequel movies, but with all that scope came a hefty $200 price tag. Timed just right for the movie’s 40th anniversary celebrations, the new set is the best of both worlds: it’s significantly more advanced and detailed than the original 2013 set, iterating on modern Lego techniques and lessons learned from the larger-scaled 2022 one, but not coming at a sizeable price tag like many of Lego’s branded sets have been coming in at as of late. It’s exactly what you want: the car, Marty, the Doc, no more, no less, with a pleasant price tag to boot. The new Back to the Future Speed Champions set is available to preorder now, ahead of its release on January 1, 2026.
