A major Amazon Web Services outage resulted in many different platforms and services being taken down for many users in the US. This includes Amazon, Alexa, Snapchat, Fortnite, ChatGPT, and more. The problem first occurred shortly after midnight PDT. The company identified the cause a couple of hours later and says that it is now “continuing to observe recovery” across most services … A great many tech services around the world depend on Amazon Web Services (AWS) with The Verge listing some of the platforms affected. Amazon, Alexa, Snapchat, Fortnite, ChatGPT, Epic Games Store, Epic Online Services […] Perplexity, Airtable, Canva, and the McDonalds app. Amazon said that the issues were seen in the US-EAST-1 region, but in some cases that resulted in global impacts. Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1 […] This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region. Global services or features that rely on US-EAST-1 endpoints such as IAM updates and DynamoDB Global tables may also be experiencing issues. At the time of writing, the company has just posted an update saying that it has “fully mitigated” the underlying issue, but that full recovery will take some time. The underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated, and most AWS Service operations are succeeding normally now. Some requests may be throttled while we work toward full resolution. Additionally, some services are continuing to work through a backlog of events such as Cloudtrail and Lambda. While most operations are recovered, requests to launch new EC2 instances (or services that launch EC2 instances such as ECS) in the US-EAST-1 Region are still experiencing increased error rates. We continue to work toward full resolution. Unclear whether Apple outage is related Three Apple services also experienced a major outage overnight. The Apple system status now says Apple TV, Apple Music and App Store issues are now resolved [after] a big outage [that saw some customers] unable to stream on Apple TV, listen to their library on Apple Music, or download new apps from the App Store.
