Apple has today brought its self-service repair and genuine parts distributor programs to the country … DIY Apple device repairs Apple spent many years fighting right-to-repair legislation, spending money to lobby against it at both state and federal levels, either trying to block it altogether or – if it couldn’t manage that – to weaken the legislation as much as possible. It continued to do so despite the company’s co-founder urging it to reconsider, pointing out that the company started out selling kits that people built for themselves. Apple’s U-turn started with the launch of a Self Service Repair program back in 2021, initially in California, and then nationally. Alongside this, the company stopped opposing right-to-repair laws and instead started actively supporting them. The program expanded to the iPad earlier this year, after previously supporting just iPhone and Mac. Self Service Repair comes to Canada The company is now committed to supporting DIY repairs globally and now offers its self-service repair program in thirty-five countries, with Canada the latest of these. Apple today announced the expansion of its Self Service Repair and Genuine Parts Distributor programs to Canada, providing individuals and independent repair professionals across the country broader access to the parts, tools, and manuals needed to repair Apple devices. “Expanding Apple’s repair programs in Canada is another milestone in our mission to make repairs easier and more accessible around the globe,” said Brian Naumann, Apple’s vice president of AppleCare Service and Repair. “With today’s announcement, we’re taking a meaningful step toward broadening device longevity, reducing waste, and empowering both customers and repair professionals with quality, secure repair options.” Apple says that this brings more convenient repair options to Canadians across the country. It notes that 80% of the population is now within a 30-minute drive of an Apple Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider or an independent repair provider.
