Even if you’ve never wondered about how Apple manages to pack so much advanced tech inside its teeny tiny AirPods, do yourself a favor and set aside a few minutes to watch this awesome breakdown by the always fascinating folks at the Real Engineering YouTube Channel. Watch the video below.
You’d be hard-pressed to find an event in which Apple didn’t proudly feature one of those animations of an exploded set of AirPods, and the dozens of impossibly tiny pieces that snugly fit together inside each earbud.
And while Apple occasionally highlights one or two engineering aspects of the AirPods, the Real Engineering YouTube Channel just published one of the coolest and most complete breakdowns of what actually is going on in there.
From the surprisingly intricate tech of each individual (and minuscule) microphone to the creative tech behind the Bluetooth antenna, the video showcases pretty much every component of the AirPods, using a 3D model built from a CT scan. It’s really cool stuff.
Why dropping your AirPods may affect battery life
Perhaps one of the more surprising facts that I learned from the video (though I obviously had a vague sense of it) is that dropping your AirPods may be one of the most harmful things you can do to their battery, due to the damage inflicted upon its densely layered core.
The video also compares the real AirPods Pro 2 with cheap knockoffs, and Apple’s engineering feats become even more apparent, especially when it comes to the battery tech.
