Sony PS5 sales hit 77 million units, almost on par with PS4's at same point

In brief: Sony has revealed that despite all the problems the PlayStation 5 faced during its pandemic-era launch, the console has now sold almost as many units as the PlayStation 4 at the same point in its predecessor's life.
In its latest earnings report, Sony said that the PS5 has now sold 77.8 million units since it launched in November 2020. That's just 1.2 million units fewer than the PS4 had managed four-and-a-half years after it was released in November 2013.
It's an especially impressive statistic when you remember the PS5 launch. Arriving in the middle of a global pandemic led to fears that it would be delayed, and while it did release as planned, the chip crisis, logistical issues, pre-order and restocking problems, and scalpers created a perfect storm that was a nightmare for Sony and gamers. Getting hold of one was almost impossible, and it wasn't until around mid-2023 that supply normalized.
