Southwest Airlines' New Baggage Fees Start Wednesday. Here's How Much They Cost and How to Avoid Them

Southwest Airlines is ending a popular perk, two free checked bags, and other amenities for low-cost fliers. Starting Wednesday, May 28, you'll be charged $35 for your first checked bag on Southwest flights and $45 for the second. This marks the first time the airline is charging for checked bags in over 50 years. However, if you're an elite member, you'll still get two bags covered. If you purchase (or purchased) tickets before Wednesday for future dates, you won't have to worry about the added cost. After Wednesday, the fee will apply to the airline's Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus and Anytime fares. The budget airline announced the change in early March while facing sinking profits.
