Elon Musk Isn’t Really ‘Leaving’ the Government, but He Is on Everyone’s Shit List

Elon Musk wrote a tweet Wednesday night explaining that his “scheduled time” as a Special Government Employee was coming to an end, leading many news outlets to conclude he was done with the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). And while it seems clear Musk has worn out his welcome with President Donald Trump, it’s naive to portray the billionaire oligarch’s announcement as a sign he’s truly “leaving” the U.S. government. “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @RealDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” Musk wrote on his social media platform X.
