With the new restyle tool, users can now prompt Meta AI to make advanced edits to images and videos before sharing them as Instagram Stories. Here’s how it works.
Restyle offers presets for videos, and prompt-based interactions for images
A few months ago, Instagram lead Adam Mosseri published a video with an interesting demo of the restyle tool, which would let users apply a few AI-powered presets to their videos before posting them:
Today, Meta released the restyle tool, confirming that it will work for both videos and images. From the company’s press release:
“Whether you want to simply remove an unwanted detail from your story, include a playful element, change the vibe using a whimsical effect, or start a trend with your friends with Add Yours stickers, now you can. Restyle your photos and videos in Instagram Stories to make edits, big or small using Meta AI.”
To use it, after selecting the photo or video you want to share as an Instagram Story, tap the new Restyle button on the top right-hand side of the interface.
If you’re sharing a video, you’ll be able to select from multiple preset styles and effects before posting. When sharing a photo, you can also include a prompt with instructions to add, remove, or modify elements, along with the preset effects.
Instagram also shares a quick guide for writing “great prompts”:
We want to give you the creative freedom to edit your photos exactly how you want. The more specific and detailed your prompt, the better Meta AI can match your vision.
Some things to consider: Subject (like “add a crown on top of the girl’s head”)
Lighting and mood (like “add dramatic lighting”, “have light from just a single paparazzi flash”)
Composition needs (like “in the bottom left corner”, “in the background”)
Style (like “make photorealistic”, “film noir style”)
Location (“in outer space”, “in Paris”)
Finally, Instagram says that if you add a sticker before posting, your friends will be able to tap it to apply the exact same edits to their own photos and videos.
The company didn’t share details about the rollout, but AI-related updates can often take time to reach users in markets where Meta AI is available.
