Google Maps for iPhone gets sheet & directions redesign, improves reachability

Following Android back in July, Google Maps is now rolling out a sheet-based redesign that replaces most fullscreen UIs in the iPhone app. Upon opening the map, you’ll notice that all bottom sheets in the app feature more rounded corners. After tapping on a place listing and sliding all the way up, the map remains visible at the top behind the status bar. This sliver helps preserve context as you navigate through the app. The other big usability change is that you no longer close listings by tapping a back button at the left side of the search bar. Instead, there’s a new ‘x’ in the right corner of the sheet next to the share shortcut, while search has been removed.
