U.S. Nuclear Agency Runs Disaster Drills Across Multiple States

If you live in the Midwest and and see a bunch of emergency personnel who look like they’re responding to a nuclear power plant explosion over the next week, don’t be alarmed. The U.S. and Canadian governments are running an exercise across multiple states to prepare for any potential nuclear disaster. And as long as you don’t see a mushroom cloud in the distance, you’re probably fine. The Department of Energy put out a press release on Thursday announcing that 70 local, state, provincial, and federal agencies from the U.S. and Canada will be running an exercise called Cobalt Magnet 25 from March 14-21. At least 3,000 people will be participating in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Ontario, which simulates a nuclear power plant accident. Cobalt Magnet 25 has been in the works for 18 months and will enable response teams to practice scanning for radiological materials and providing emergency services to the population.
