Waymo Expands Driverless Rides to Washington, DC. Plus, Where You Can Hail a Robotaxi Right Now

Self-driving cars are slowly becoming less sci-fi and more real-world as companies like Waymo -- the driverless arm of Google's parent company Alphabet -- expand into more cities. On Tuesday, the company shared it's expanding into Washington, DC, and will offer rides through its Waymo One app there starting in 2026. Waymo currently operates fully autonomous rides for the general public in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas. In January, the company returned to the nation's capital to test its autonomous driving tech, and announced it would also begin testing with manually driven vehicles in 10 new cities this year, starting with Las Vegas and San Diego. Waymo is also slated to expand into Atlanta this year, through a partnership with Uber. In Washington, DC, Waymo says it'll bring more vehicles to the city in the coming weeks, and work to scale its service throughout the year.
