No Man’s Sky adds paleontology in Relics update, launching today

Hello Games has revealed details about the latest update coming to the already massive No Man’s Sky. Called Relics, Update 5.6 adds prehistoric scenery and the profession of paleontology to its massive universe, affording players the chance to dig up the bones of ancient beings. The update also includes a community expedition for players to compete for the rarest finds. The Relics update rolls out for PC, console and VR today and is free for existing players. According to the studio, it attempted to imitate earthly paleontology in the sense that players who dig up fossils will have to piece together the skeletons of creatures from context — or ignore context entirely. They can put together museums of their finds and share them with other players. Players can also barter with an in-universe specialist for rarer fossils.
