Chris Malone, who led OpenAI's data center strategy after joining from Meta and Google in March 2024, has left the company. OpenAI confirmed it recently restructured its infrastructure organization, shifting oversight so that Malone no longer reported to President Greg Brockman but instead to VP Sachin Katti before his exit. The company says several other executives, including Uday Ruddarraju, Brent Mayo and Spas Lazarov, remain in charge of its data center efforts.
A National Bureau of Economic Research survey found that more than 90 percent of executives reported no impact from AI on their firm's employment over the past three years, and 89 percent saw no gains in labor productivity. Despite this, companies are continuing to cut jobs while citing AI as justification, according to University of Pittsburgh professor Mark Ma.
Nvidia has informed top customers that server systems built around its Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin AI chips will cost more than 15% extra when they ship early next year, according to a Bloomberg report. Contract manufacturers serving Microsoft, Google, and Oracle have already passed along the increases, which vary by chip generation and memory configuration.
