An amateur vacuum tube maker built a second diode tube specifically to document the process for a Make: Magazine article after his original tube, made hastily before Hackaday Superconference 2022, lacked good process photos. The piece, published in Make: Volume 86, details the tricky pinch-seal technique using Tungsten wire welded to Nickel pins and coated with oxide to bond glass and metal in a vacuum-tight seal.
xTool introduced the X1, a new laser cutter that lets users swap in CO2, Diode, UV, Fiber, or MOPA laser modules on one machine. It's the company's first flying-galvo design, pairing gantry-style size with galvo speed, and it runs a dual-head setup with a CO2 laser alongside a swappable galvo backpack. The default configuration pairs a 55w CO2 laser with a 20w diode galvo head, with launch expected in October and pricing still unannounced.
OLED screens use self-emitting pixels that dim gradually with use, and because sub-pixels for red, green and blue age at different rates, uneven wear can create visible ghosting known as burn-in. Static content such as news tickers, channel logos, or long gaming sessions with fixed HUD elements accelerates this uneven degradation in specific screen regions.
