Readdle has updated PDF Expert to take advantage of new iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 capabilities, most notably a Handwriting Recognition feature that indexes handwritten notes as searchable text across a user's entire document library. The update, built on Apple's PKStrokeRecognizer API, supports 29 languages and also adds Apple Pencil Pro squeeze-gesture support for opening the app's tool palette, along with an expanded Liquid Glass visual redesign.
Boox has unveiled the Palma 3, its latest phone-shaped E Ink reader, alongside the larger Note Air6 C and Note Mini C. The Palma 3 keeps the same 6.13-inch, 300ppi E Ink Carta screen as its predecessor but adds a new aluminum-and-fiberglass build, a Qualcomm Q-6690 processor, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, a 16MP camera, and support for an optional active stylus. It ships with Android 16, a major jump from Android 13 on the Palma 2.
Researchers Stefanie Tellex and Atsunobu Kotani at Brown University built a robot system that, after training solely on Japanese characters, was able to reproduce handwriting in Hindi, Greek, English print and cursive, and even sketch the Mona Lisa without direct training on those examples. The system works using two coordinated models: one governing individual pen strokes and another managing the overall structure of characters.
