EA is reportedly hitting the brakes on the Need for Speed franchise

The Need for Speed franchise could be making its last laps — at least for the time being. Matthew Everingham, a photographer who frequently contributed to car culture website Speedhunters, said in social media posts that Electronic Arts has "shelved Need for Speed" and is "quietly parking" the series. Speedhunters, which was funded by EA and was last updated in April of this year, will also reportedly cease operations for now. EA hasn't released an official statement on the fate of the Need for

Let me pay for Firefox

Hi Mozilla community, I’m a long time Mozilla supporter, I’ve published free (as in freedom) and open-source software, and I desperately want Mozilla to charge for Firefox. If that sounds like a contradiction, please keep reading. I first became involved with the Mozilla community around 2006. I was active in the Spread Firefox project, where I ran a contest that encouraged others to promote Firefox in the most creative ways they could imagine. In hindsight, I guess it could have been called a

The Whoop 5.0 Is a Massive Upgrade to Health Tracking. I Wasn’t Ready.

At some point in the late 2010s, I became obsessed with my heart rate. I was at a point in my fitness life that I was training for marathons and I cared a whole lot about every process involved. I spent a certain percentage of my workday staring at my heart rate on my fitness watch and feeling smug if I kept my resting heart rate below 50 beats per minute (bpm) and wigging out if it went over 60 bpm. Heart rate was my gateway drug into health tracking, and it soon devolved into an unhinged compu

Open Channel: What’d You Think of ‘Superman’?

It’s been over a decade since the last proper Superman movie hit theaters, and this weekend finally broke that long streak with Superman (formerly subtitled Legacy). This has been one of the most talked-about superhero movies in recent memory, and one that comes with some baggage. Before writer/director James Gunn came onboard, it seemed Henry Cavill would don the cape again after being MIA from the DCEU the last few years, only for that to fall apart. With a new leading man in David Corenswet

Hill Space: Neural nets that do perfect arithmetic (to 10⁻¹⁶ precision)

When understood and used properly, the constraint W = tanh(Ŵ) ⊙ σ(M̂) (introduced in NALU by Trask et al. 2018 ) creates a unique parameter topology where optimal weights for discrete operations can be calculated rather than learned . During training, they're able to converge with extreme speed and reliability towards the optimal solution. Most neural networks struggle with basic arithmetic. They approximate, they fail on extrapolation, and they're inconsistent. But what if there was a way to m

I’ve been using Garmin watches for 5 years and just discovered this clever trick

Ryan Haines / Android Authority At this point, I’ve probably reviewed more than a dozen Garmin watches since taking my place as Android Authority’s resident runner. You might say it’s become a big part of my personality, but I’d argue it always was one. I’ve spent countless hours logging countless miles (alright, Strava probably has an accurate number) across everything from the Instinct to the Forerunner to the Fenix, and I thought I knew everything there was to know about Garmin’s lineup. At

Lost Chapter of Automate the Boring Stuff: Audio, Video, and Webcams in Python

The third edition of Automate the Boring Stuff with Python is now available for purchase or to read for free online. It has updated content and several new chapters, but one chapter that was left on the cutting room floor was "Working with Audio, Video, and Webcams". I present the 26-page rough draft chapter in this blog, where you can learn how to write Python code that records and plays multimedia content. Working with Audio, Video, and Webcams These days a smartphone is a portable film st

This $99 discreet, subscription-free fitness band is a good budget Whoop tracker alternative

Amazfit Helio Strap The Amazfit Helio Strap isn’t trying to be a high-powered training tool, but instead a comfortable, distraction-free fitness and health tracker that delivers solid wellness insights without the bloat of a screen or the burden of a subscription. If you're after a low-maintenance wearable that quietly does its job and lets you focus on your day, it’s a great value at $99. I’m a screen fiend as much as the next shopper, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate a distraction-fre

The fish kick may be the fastest subsurface swim stroke yet (2015)

I tug my black swim cap over my hair, strap on my pink goggles, and keep a focused calm, like Michael Phelps before a race. It’s lap swim on a Monday afternoon at my local YMCA, and I’m going to attempt the fish kick. Most fish move through the water with a horizontal wiggle. The fish kick challenges you to copy this movement: You completely submerge yourself underwater, position yourself on your side, keep your arms tight above your head in a streamline, and propel yourself forward with symmetr

Futureproof Fiber Gives Homeowners an Edge, but Access Isn't Always Fair

We live in a fast-evolving digital age, making a high-speed internet connection as essential as running water and electricity. But a lack of affordable internet options perpetuates what is known as the broadband divide -- the gap that divides those who can or can't digitally connect in meaningful ways. A lesser-known discussion point around the broadband divide goes beyond a lack of internet access. Lack of fast internet -- fiber internet, specifically -- negatively affects home values, hurting

Sequoia bets on silence

There is a time-honored crisis management strategy, wherein one says nothing and waits for the outrage to pass. For Sequoia Capital, the strategy worked pretty well this week. While partner Shaun Maguire initially weathered criticism over an inflammatory social media post, that initial indignation cooled quickly. Now, some seem to think that Maguire’s defiant stance may even be strengthening his position. Business Insider actually called it “good for deal flow” — controversy as competitive advan

I replaced my AirPods Pro with $130 HUAWEI earbuds, and I didn’t want to go back

HUAWEI Freebuds 6 The HUAWEI FreeBuds 6 are yet another pair of open-fit wireless earbuds, not unlike the AirPods 4 and Samsung Galaxy Buds 3. But with a unique design, comfortable in-ear fit, great sound quality, and surprisingly decent ANC, the FreeBuds 6 stand above their competition. My go-to pair of wireless earbuds is the AirPods Pro 2. While that may sound sacrilegious as an Android user, Apple’s earbuds just work so well for me. They sound great, have excellent noise canceling, a comfor

I Tried MyFitnessPal's New Meal Planner Feature and Was Pleasantly Surprised by the Healthy Recipes

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise. Anna Gragert/CNET You're likely familiar with MyFitnessPal as an app that tracks your food intake, allowing you to log calories, weight, exercise, sleep and more. Conveniently, Prime Day fitness tracker deals (all four days of them) drop right in the middle of summer, which makes this a great time to pick up the smartwatch or smart ring that you just didn't have the cash for at Christmas. Rocket maker Firefly Aerospace files to go public under ticker FLY

Firefly Aerospace CEO Jason Kim sits for an interview at the Firefly Aerospace mission operations center in Leander, Texas, on July 9, 2025. Rocket maker Firefly Aerospace filed for an initial public offering on Friday, with plans to trade under the ticker symbol "FLY" on the Nasdaq. Firefly's planned offering comes during a resurgence period for IPOs after the market collapsed in 2022 as rising interest rates and skyrocketing inflation deterred investors from betting on riskier assets. Some

The best Plex alternative in 2025 is Jellyfin, and you really should try it

Robert Triggs / Android Authority Self-hosting is an increasingly popular alternative for those looking to escape the convoluted (and expensive) content-streaming landscape and return to a more traditional personal ownership approach to their media collection. Once you’ve bought your fancy new Network Attached Storage (NAS) and filled it with your favorite movies, the next step is to figure out what software to run on it. There are at least two solid options for serving up your media collectio

Report: David Zaslav Pushed Back on Ta-Nahesi Coates’ Black ‘Superman’ Movie for Being ‘Too Woke’

On the eve of James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman film, the Wall Street Journal released a quantitative report that essentially signaled the film as Warner Bros.’ last chance to make its comic book brand soar. No pressure. However, within the lengthy, half-pop culture, half-financial report was the revelation that Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav turned down a script for a Black Superman movie in 2022 because he felt it was too woke. According to the WSJ, the Black Superman script, which was

I Overlooked These 12 Foods Until I Learned How Healthy They Are

It's easy to believe that being healthy means buying superfoods, all organic produce, expensive supplements and pricey powders. After all, these are all over social media. But that's not true. The Switch 2 Pro Controller does not seem easy to repair at all

The Switch 2 is in many ways a more premium and powerful version of the original Switch, but its sleek design seems to have come at a cost. Not only is the console itself difficult to repair, but a new iFixit teardown video shows that the Switch 2 Pro Controller isn't any easier. Based on iFixit's teardown, you have to completely disassemble the Switch 2 Pro Controller to access the parts you'll likely need to fix first. Accessing the joysticks and battery requires removing an adhesive-secured
