FreeBSD gets GRAND implementation to fix IPv6 first-packet delay

A FreeBSD contributor has implemented GRAND (Gratuitous Neighbour Advertisement), a mechanism that addresses an asymmetry in IPv6 Neighbour Discovery where a host can reach its router immediately but the router may not yet know how to reach the host. Under GRAND, the host proactively announces its new IPv6 address so the router already holds a Neighbour Cache entry before any return traffic arrives.

Ex-TikTok duo launches Superpose, an AI app that suggests photo poses

Former TikTok employees Melody Chu and Jing Liu have launched Superpose, an iOS camera app that uses AI to generate four suggested poses for a selfie or photo of a friend. Users can save these AI-generated poses or use a match feature to align themselves within the frame, and the app has been downloaded over 22,000 times with more than 190,000 poses generated since its July launch.

Firefox.com rebuilt entirely with native CSS, no preprocessors used

Mozilla worked with Lincoln Loop and a design lead to rebuild Firefox.com using only modern, native CSS, dropping preprocessors like Sass entirely. The project exported custom properties straight from design files and used CSS Grid and Flexbox, building a system of more than 70 components and 25 page templates as Wagtail components so non-engineers can assemble pages. The site now supports 19 locales, with a lightweight branded stylesheet ensuring older browsers still get basic accessible styling.

OpenShell details formal-methods approach to auditing AI agent permission changes

OpenShell published research on using formal methods, including the Z3 solver, to verify that permission changes proposed by autonomous AI agents remain within the bounds originally approved by a human operator. The team argues that as organizations scale from a handful of coding agents to hundreds or thousands running long, open-ended tasks, manual permission review becomes impossible to sustain. Their approach aims to mathematically prove that scoped agent policies never exceed the intent of the overall system's charter.

Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 debut new Readiness health app

Apple has introduced a Readiness app exclusive to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, powered by an upgraded Health Sensing System with new optical and electrical sensors. The app assigns a 0-10 score categorized into four tiers—Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, and Go For It—based on activity, sleep, and vitals data. The feature will not be available on older Apple Watch models, including Series 11 and Ultra 3, even after updating to watchOS 27.

Police officers logged bizarre justifications for Flock license-plate camera searches

Public records reveal that law enforcement officers across multiple agencies searched Flock Safety's nationwide license-plate camera network using vague or joke-like reasons such as 'LMAO,' 'IDK,' 'hehe,' and 'asdfg' instead of legitimate case justifications. Flock's system requires officers to enter a reason before running a search, but the logs show many entries that appear to be careless or unauthorized lookups rather than tied to actual investigations.

Chinese researchers build perovskite solar cells that work underwater for years

A team of Chinese scientists modified perovskite solar cells to survive and function while submerged several meters below the ocean surface. By altering the perovskite's chemical composition, adding a water-repelling coating, and using larger crystal structures, they created cells resistant to seawater degradation that still efficiently capture dim, filtered sunlight.

Yum! Brands CFO Signals Openness to Acquiring New Restaurant Brand

Yum! Brands CFO Ranjith Roy told the Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference that the recent sale of Pizza Hut shows the company is willing to make aggressive portfolio changes, including potentially adding a new brand if the opportunity fits. He noted the priority remains strengthening current holdings—Taco Bell, KFC and Habit Burger & Grill—before pursuing any acquisition.

Guide details proper long-term storage practices for old hard drives

A storage guide outlines how heat, humidity, and magnetic fields can damage hard drives over time, and notes that even undisturbed drives can fail due to seized mechanical parts or degraded capacitors. It recommends backing up all important data before archiving a drive, verifying the transfer, and following the 3-2-1 backup rule: three copies of data on two different mediums with one stored offsite.

TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 to host session on scaling AI prototypes into production
