Typographic Portrait of Jean Sibelius Composed Entirely of Brass Rule In the dimly lit “printing cellar” of Media Museum and Archives Merkki is a remarkable and curious object. It’s a mosaic of tightly arranged brass rule and spacing material, made by a Finnish typographer Valto Malmiola in 1937. Note, it’s not a single piece of metal, and it’s neither engraved nor etched… it’s thousands of individual metal bits, pieced together by hand, and locked tightly into a frame for printing. Figure 1.

A team of researchers in Germany have revived algae cells found buried at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, where they'd lain dormant for more than 7,000 years. For millennia, the cells, imprisoned under layers of sediment, were deprived of oxygen or light. But once revived, they showed full functional recovery, the researchers report in a study published in The ISME Journal, firing back up their oxygen production and multiplying again like it was no big deal. According to the team, this is the ol

Key Takeaways Scientists have discovered “berkelocene,” the first organometallic molecule to be characterized containing the heavy element berkelium. The extremely oxygen- and water-sensitive complex was formed from 0.3 milligram of berkelium-249 using specialized facilities for handling air-sensitive and radioactive materials. The breakthrough disrupts long-held theories about the chemistry of the elements that follow uranium in the periodic table. A research team led by the Department of En

Agents are the next big thing in AI. Some define these “agents” differently from others, but the general idea is, they’re AI-powered tools that can perform tasks autonomously. The agent hype has reached a fever pitch, but one startup was relatively early to the game: LlamaIndex. Founded by former Uber research scientists, Jerry Liu and Simon Suo, in 2023, LlamaIndex allows developers to build custom agents over unstructured data. “LlamaIndex started as a toy open-source project in November 202
