Microsoft released update KB5002655 to address a silent copy-and-paste failure introduced by the September security patch KB5002914, but the fix only applies to MSI-based installations of Excel 2016. Users of Excel Online, 2024, 2021, 2019, and Click-to-Run editions of 2016 remain affected, with Microsoft citing a code regression as the cause and recommending the Paste Special workaround in the meantime.
A newly published Nix flake automates installing Microsoft 365 (click-to-run Office) on Linux without a virtual machine, using the umu-launcher tool alongside GE-Proton, the gaming-focused Wine build from Valve and GloriousEggroll, with Bottles' ProtoSoda Wine core offered as an alternative runner. The project doesn't bundle any Microsoft software itself; instead its ms365 script fetches the Office Deployment Tool and Office files at install time, requiring users to supply their own Microsoft 365 license and sign in. The approach builds on prior community work, including Bottles' reports of Office 365 running on Wine and older ruados/eylenburg registry and DLL tweaks.
The Document Foundation's LibreOffice 26.8, released August 26th, surpassed 1 million installer downloads in its first week, excluding updates via Linux repositories, making it the suite's most downloaded release ever. The foundation followed up with a post explaining that it deliberately excludes generative AI by default, citing principles like user control, no data leaving the device, no telemetry, and no vendor lock-in, while still allowing community plugins for those who want AI features.
