Google is finally changing its tune about call recording on Pixel phones

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR Google appears to be backing down from its long-standing position against letting Pixel phones record voice calls. The company has already updated support pages, indicating that the option may exist for Pixel 6 and later models. So far we’ve only seen confirmation out of India, and it’s unclear which markets will ultimately get access. Smartphones may do a million and one different things, but at their very core, these devices are still phones. You ma

Internet Archive’s big battle with music publishers ends in settlement

A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit where music publishers sued the Internet Archive over the Great 78 Project, an effort to preserve early music recordings that only exist on brittle shellac records. No details of the settlement have so far been released, but a court filing on Monday confirmed that the Internet Archive and UMG Recordings, Capitol Records, Sony Music Entertainment, and other record labels "have settled this matter." More details may come in the next 45 days, when parties

Google’s working on making it easier to find calls you’ve recorded (APK teardown)

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR Google’s Phone app supports call recording in select areas. Earlier this year we saw the Phone app picking up new filters to sort through your call log. Now the app appears to be working on a filter to quickly display calls that have been recorded. Being able to easily record a voice call is exactly the sort of thing a smartphone should be useful for, but messy legal concerns keep the feature from being nearly as ubiquitous as it should be. Google’s got

Gear News of the Week: Always-Recording Smart Glasses, and Google Teases a New Nest Speaker

First, they showed the world how easy it is to add facial recognition to Meta's smart glasses. Now, they're making their own pair of smart specs. Former Harvard students Caine Ardayfio and AnhPhu Nguyen this week announced Halo, a startup of roughly 11 people working to develop always-recording smart glasses. The pair dropped out of Harvard to develop Halo X, smart glasses with a display on the lens that can answer any question someone asks. Powered by a combination of Google's Gemini and Perp

The Pixel 6 Pro camera crashes when zooming, and there is no fix in sight

Robert Triggs / Android Authority TL;DR A persistent bug causes the Pixel 6 Pro’s camera app to crash when switching from 1x to 4x during a 4K 30fps video. Despite appearing as early as February and spanning multiple updates, there’s still no official fix. Customer service allegedly blames hardware, requiring out-of-warranty repairs. Although the Pixel 6 series is a few years old, the flagship phones still have plenty of life left. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are promised to receive updates until

Ray-Ban Meta stealth stickers go viral but fail to beat safeguards

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR A TikTok seller is promoting vinyl “Ghost Dots” that claim to block the recording light on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Meta’s glasses disable photo and video recording when the light is blocked, and comments suggest the stickers don’t work. TikTok briefly removed the product, but it’s already back on sale. Anyone talking to a Ray-Ban Meta wearer probably wants to know if they’re being recorded, which is why the tech giant added a recording light to it

Truecaller is discontinuing its call recording function on iOS — just over two years after the feature was launched — as the Swedish company opts to focus on its core offering: fighting spam calls. Users with saved call recordings can either download them to their devices, share them via email or messaging apps, or switch their storage preference to iCloud

iOS 26 updates for AirPods preview: Enhanced audio recording, camera remote and more

Of all the new iOS 26 features that Apple previewed at WWDC in June, AirPods updates were only briefly mentioned. Studio-quality audio recording and improved call clarity got top billing, while the addition of a camera remote control was also quickly discussed. However, when the beta software arrived last week, it turned out there were actually more features than described at the event, making this a meatier update for Apple’s recent AirPods than initially indicated. I’ve spent some time testing

N78 band 5G NR recordings

In my last post about 5G NR, which was part of a series in which I analyzed the signals in a short recording of an idle srsRAN gNB, I mentioned that I had already decoded all the signals that appear in the recording, and that to move on with my 5G series I would need to make and use some more complex real world recordings next. A 5G band I’m particularly interested in is n78 (3.3 – 3.8 GHz TDD). This is being used to deploy 5G in many European countries, including Spain, as showed by this list

Here are the new AirPods features Apple just announced

Apple has announced two new AirPods features coming to some existing models – including bringing back a feature from the EarPods days … Camera control You may recall that back in the wired EarPods days, you could use them as a remote shutter release for the camera.
