The Foundation series on Apple TV+ has increasingly been hailed as one of the streamer’s best shows. And despite a lot of uncertainty surrounding the show’s fate, Apple has just announced good news: Foundation will return for season 4.

Foundation officially renewed for season 4 on Apple TV+

Foundation is about to air its season 3 finale, wrapping up what’s been called “one of the best shows of the year and a must-watch show for all sci-fi fans.”

And until today, there were a lot of questions around the show continuing.

But Apple has just announced that Foundation season 4 is in the works.

“There is no series quite like ‘Foundation’ and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four,” say co-showrunners and executive producers Ian Goldberg and David Kob. “We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, and to be working alongside some of the most talented, passionate creative partners in the business.”

One big reason for season 4’s uncertainty—besides the show’s reported high costs—was the departure of former showrunner David S. Goyer following season 3.

Fortunately, Goyer is still involved as an executive producer, and the arrival of new showrunners could provide a fresh infusion of creative energy for the next season.

Here’s what Apple’s head of programming said about the renewal:

“It’s been fantastic to watch ‘Foundation’ become such a global phenomenon, with fans tuning in from every corner of the world,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming, Apple TV+. “With each new season, the excitement around this trailblazing sci-fi epic just keeps building due to the bold storytelling and collective artistry of this extraordinarily talented cast and creative team. We’re excited to keep exploring this universe together in season four.”
