Protein Powder: Heavy Metals Study, and How to Pick a Safe One

You've probably heard about the heavy metals that were detected in protein powder as reported by non-profit organization Clean Project Label. It tested 160 protein powders on the market and found that 47% exceeded California Proposition 65 safety thresholds for toxic metals. Its findings showed that plant-based protein powders had three times more lead than whey-based powders, and the chocolate flavors had four times more lead than vanilla. Organic versions also appeared to have three times more lead and twice the amount of cadmium (another metal) than their non-organic counterparts.
As alarming as it may be to hear reports such as this one, it’s also important to take a moment to understand a few things regarding these types of studies, who conducts them and what the data means in the grand scheme of things.
