The end is nigh for Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher, and it’s all climaxing in one last battle… and another hunt for Ciri (Freya Allan), as she once again becomes the key to all things for the fate of the Continent. It’s a good job then that Geralt is on the hunt for her and has a new party of allies to help him. Oh, and a shiny new face, to boot.
Yes, the big talking point of The Witcher‘s fourth season (with a fifth and final to come) remains the handover of the titular hero from Henry Cavill, who played Geralt for the first three seasons of the series, to Liam Hemsworth, who will take on the role for the show’s final outings. Obviously, no one is going to address it in this trailer—although a fun voiceover line plays with this, teasing that “the Witcher is in a state of flux… you are becoming something new,” although whether that’s about Geralt or perhaps even Ciri’s own prior uncompleted attempts to undergo the transformation to become a mutant swordslinger is left unknown.
Meanwhile, Hemsworth’s Geralt is here to do Geralt things, which are mostly to stab people, stab monsters, wonder where Ciri is, and harumph at all the things a Witcher would typically harumph at.
Suffice to say, that means it’s a pretty typical trailer for The Witcher at this point. Time will tell if the new season manages to capture some of the spark of the show’s early output, but at least it shows that even in changing its hero’s face, The Witcher by and large doesn’t have to change much else to keep its swords-and-sorcery fantasy ticking on.
The fourth season of The Witcher begins streaming on Netflix October 30.
