Apple kicked off last month’s iPhone keynote with a video dedicated to design, leading with this famous quote from Steve Jobs: “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
Apple has now uploaded this video separately to its YouTube channel.
The aforementioned Steve Jobs quote comes from an interview he did with The New York Times in 2003. You can read the full interview here. In it, Jobs and Jony Ive discussed the early days of the iPod and Apple’s design philosophy. Here’s the full quote from Jobs:
“Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
Apple’s inclusion of the Jobs quote in this video was met with some criticism from pundits who questioned the decision to invoke Steve Jobs’s name the same year it rolled out a dramatic, and somewhat controversial, redesign to iOS.
I personally think the video is excellent and including the Jobs quote refers to the current state of the broader Apple ecosystem rather than any particular single thing. You can watch it below. Let us know what you think down in the comments.
