AirPods Max debuted nearly five years ago, and aside from a minor USB-C revision last year, there’s never been a proper AirPods Max 2. But Apple is preparing a true next generation model. Here’s what we know so far about AirPods Max 2.
Lighter weight design
When AirPods Max launched in 2020, users found a lot to like about the over-ear headphones, but two complaints stood out:
the $550 price tag was expensive and they were fairly heavy to wear

AirPods Max 2 will reportedly address the weight issue. Ming Chi-Kuo says Apple’s updated model will be “lighter” than the current version.
It’s unknown whether other big design updates are in store, but it’s possible Apple will need to change the overall AirPods Max look to achieve its weight goal.
New H-series chip
When Apple released its new USB-C version of AirPods Max last fall, it neglected to update the H1 chip in the headphones.
This decision means AirPods Max are lacking many of the H2-exclusive features found in the more affordable AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4.
But when AirPods Max 2 arrive, they’re expected to finally include an updated H-series chip. Likely this will be an H3 chip, which AirPods Pro 3 are expected to debut in the coming year.
Unfortunately, the latest rumors indicate we won’t see AirPods Max 2 launch until 2027.
Ming-Chi Kuo recently reported that Apple plans for the hardware revision to “enter mass production in 2027.”
Though Apple could launch new AirPods Max at any point during the year, it most often reserves new AirPods for fall launches—meaning we’re likely still two full years away from the new model.
AirPods Max 2 rumors: wrap-up
If you’re interested in buying AirPods Max, it’s a fairly good time to do so. With AirPods Max 2 not expected for another couple years, and the new USB-C model getting three software upgrades recently, Apple clearly intends for the current model to be supported for a long while yet.
