Microsoft has fixed a known issue that will cause the classic Outlook email client to crash when opening emails or starting a new message.
The bug impacts users across all Microsoft 365 Office channels who updated Outlook for Microsoft 365 earlier this month.
"When you open or start a new email, classic Outlook crashes. This issue occurs because Outlook cannot open the Forms Library. The emerging cases for this issue are on virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)," the Outlook team said when it acknowledged the issue last week.
The company says the bug has been addressed across multiple channels, with fixed versions released earlier this week for Current Channel Preview, Monthly Enterprise Channel, Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, Outlook 2021, and Outlook 2024 users.
Redmond will also release non-security updates to fix the issue for Outlook 2016 and Outlook 2019 on July 1st and July 8th, respectively.
Those who can't immediately update or are still waiting for a fixed version can manually create the missing FORMS2 folder at C:\Users\
To do that, you have to follow these steps:
Close Outlook and other Office applications. Select Start > Run and enter the path %localappdata%\Microsoft and select OK. In the File Explorer menu, select New > Folder and name it FORMS2.
Microsoft has also resolved an Outlook issue affecting users in the Current and Beta channels that caused mailbox folders to flicker and move around when items were moved to the folders after updating to Outlook version 2505 (Build 18827.20128).
Affected users who can't apply the fix are advised to revert to version 2504 or toggle off caching of the shared mailbox by disabling Download Shared Folders as a workaround.
