Second-gen iPhone Air may get two cameras

While there is evidence to suggest that the iPhone Air has proven less popular than Apple had hoped, it seems the company hasn’t given up on it yet.

A leaker with a decent track-record says that the company is currently exploring a second-gen iPhone Air with two cameras instead of just one …

When I had some hands-on time with one myself, I concluded that the iPhone Air form factor was absolutely the future of iPhone.

Everyone at the keynote said that it looked just as good in real life as in the presentation, and I would absolutely echo this. It looks completely stunning. It also feels really great in the hand. Even with the additional weight of the store tether blocks, it feels incredibly light. I’d wondered whether the very thin edges might feel uncomfortable in the hand, but absolutely not. It’s clear a lot of thought went into the side profile to make it feel comfortable to hold. I think this is the future of iPhone design, not just because this particular model is so thin, but also the approach of putting almost all of the electronics into the camera plateau. I spent a little time with the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the main body is thinner than last year’s model for the same reason.

For me personally, however, it was never a contender because it doesn’t match the camera capabilities of the iPhone Pro models. Making regular use of both the ultrawide and telephoto cameras, I could never settle for just one.

It seems I’m not alone in this, and Apple appears to be listening. Leaker Digital Chat Station says that Apple is considering adding an ultra-wide lens alongside the main camera to the second-generation model. They refer to it as the iPhone 18 Air, though it is unlikely that Apple would use this naming.

The iPhone 18 Air is currently at the usual stage of development [for a model to be launched next year]. The 6.5-inch high-brush mid-screen 3D face horizontal runway design remains unchanged. It is also an ultra-thin design. Apple is considering adding a lens to supplement the 48MP main camera with a 48MP ultra-wide one.

Apple apparently thinks users will be happy with a digital crop for a 2x telephoto capability.

If you like the iPhone Air but have been deterred by the single camera, would this win you over? Please share your thoughts in the comments. (Note that the image shown is merely a render, not a leak.)
