iPadOS 26.2 brings key multitasking upgrade, new app features, more

iPadOS 26.2 is now available for all users, bringing the latest new features and improvements to the iPad.

One major change involves bringing back a key multitasking tool that was available in iPadOS 18 but removed in iPadOS 26.0.

Drag and drop can now be used for placing apps into different multitasking setups.

When Apple introduced its more flexible, dynamic app windowing system in iPadOS 26, it removed the old system that relied on drag and drop gestures.

But in iPadOS 26.2, you can now drag app icons out of your dock, or Spotlight results, then drop them on to different parts of the screen as a multitasking shortcut.

When you hold an app icon over the screen, the icon now morphs into different shapes to indicate what form it will take when you drop it. You can use drag and drop to open an app in fullscreen, a half-screen Split View layout, or make it your Slide Over window.

Beyond this multitasking upgrade, iPadOS 26.2 offers a variety of additional new features:

This is expected to be the last big iPad software update of the year, aside from a potential beta release of iPadOS 26.3 in the days ahead.
