With the latest update, Telegram users can now create a passkey to instantly log in to their accounts without needing an SMS code or password. Here’s how to activate it.

Telegram joins the passkey club

Since Apple and Google confirmed in 2022 that they would support the new passkey authentication standard, companies and app developers have been working to add passkey support to their own platforms.

Since then, slowly but surely, we’ve seen popular apps and platforms introduce passkey support, allowing users to log in to their accounts through biometric verification, such as Face ID or Touch ID.

Last weekend, Telegram joined the ever-growing list of passkey-ready apps in an update that also introduced gift purchase offers and audio in Stories.

To create a passkey on Telegram, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Passkey.

Once you tap “Create Passkey”, Telegram will generate a unique cryptographic passkey tied to your account and store it on your device.

From that point on, you will be able to sign in using Face ID or Touch ID, without entering an SMS code or password.

Telegram also notes that the passkey can also “be synced with password management apps from iCloud, Google and more.”
