Run Away

The latest entry in Netflix’s deal to adapt just about everything Harlan Coben writes down, Run Away features James Nesbitt as Simon Greene, a father desperate to bring his troubled daughter Paige (Ellie de Lange) home. But when Paige’s drug dealer boyfriend Aaron (Thomas Flynn) turns up dead—an event that happened not too long after a video of Simon beating him up in public went viral—Simon has to dodge a murder investigation while being drawn deeper into mysteries surrounding the missing Paige. Run Away doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to crime dramas, but with a solid cast and plenty of twists and surprises through its eight episodes, it’s perfect binge viewing for the long, cold winter.

His & Hers

Based on Alice Feeney’s crime novel of the same name, His & Hers is a glossy affair, fronted by Jon Bernthal and Tessa Thompson as small-town detective Jack Harper and his estranged reporter wife Anna. Following the death of their daughter, Anna left Jack to care for her mother Alice (Crystal Fox) while throwing herself into work. The pair are reunited during the investigation of a murder and ultimately become suspects as connections to the dead woman emerge. It’s soapy at times, but the exploration of how grief can shatter lives gives Thompson and Bernthal plenty to work with, and delivers some unpredictable narrative swerves along the way.

City of Shadows

This Spanish crime thriller plays with a lot of genre conventions—a disgraced cop, Milo Malart (Isak Férriz), forced to prove himself again; the frosty relationship with a new female partner, Rebeca Garrido (Verónica Echegui), brought in from another department; a maze of clues and conspiracy elements—but gets a distinct twist thanks to its Barcelona setting. When a series of ritualistic murders spreads across the city, seemingly tied to the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, the city itself becomes a character in a sprawling and increasingly bizarre case. The English-dubbed version leaves a lot to be desired, but the original Spanish audio and English subtitles are available, and make for the perfect way to enjoy this twisty, pulpy limited series.
