Song Sung Blue received a surprise Oscar nod when the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were announced. Kate Hudson was recognized in the Best Actress category for her performance in the movie, 25 years after her last nomination. Her first was for her supporting role as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe's rock-and-roll movie, Almost Famous.

The movie draws inspiration from the 2008 documentary of the same name about the singing duo Claire and Mike Sardina, better known as Lightning and Thunder, the Neil Diamond cover band they formed. Hudson plays Claire opposite Hugh Jackman's Mike. The story follows the real-life married couple as they performed together throughout Milwaukee in the '80s and '90s. Mike Sardina died of a head injury in 2006.
