Why This Matters

The MacBook Neo's internal design emphasizes battery capacity, speakers, and innovative mechanical trackpad, while its use of the A18 Pro chip marks a significant shift towards iPhone-derived processors in MacBooks. This development could influence future Apple hardware design and performance expectations, offering consumers a more affordable yet powerful option. The focus on internal layout and new features highlights Apple's ongoing innovation in balancing portability, performance, and cost.

Key Takeaways

Apple’s new MacBook Neo comes out tomorrow, and you can read our hands-on review now. While the official release will instantly prompt teardown efforts, we’re already learning more about the internal layout today.

MacBook Neo is mostly battery and speakers inside

My colleague Chance Miller has spent the last several days testing the MacBook Neo and calls it “a truly great Mac at an unbelievable price.” Or as I like to think of that new “citrus” color laptop: the new MacBook Neo is no lemon.

Zesty zingers aside, there’s one video review that takes a look inside.

YouTuber Dave2D ventured where no reviewer has gone before (probably) and actually removed the bottom of the MacBook Neo.

This shows us just how much of the new MacBook Neo is populated internally with battery, those side-firing stereo speakers, and the new mechanical trackpad.

Dave2D’s explanation of how the new mechanical-click trackpad works is interesting too. It’s basically a plate floating over a centered button.

A much smaller portion internally is dedicated to the actual computing parts. We’ll wait for the usual in-depth tear downs to follow for more insight into what’s happening there.

The defining computing feature, of course, is that MacBook Neo is the first Mac to run on a chip originally designed for the iPhone. Its A18 Pro chip is a variant of a chip previously used in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

MacBook Neo comes out tomorrow for $599.
