Sports has defeated AI for the top of the App Store. March Madness is in full swing, and that’s knocked ChatGPT out of the top downloaded apps spot for today.
In fact, it’s not just one March Madness-related app pushing around the top AI apps.
ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini have recently remained the top downloaded apps, according to the App Store chart.
Another AI app, Perplexity’s Comet browser, briefly ranked in the top three, pushing out Gemini, when the AI web browser came out yesterday too.
As of this morning, however, CBS Sports is the top downloaded app on the App Store. ChatGPT has dropped to #2, followed by Claude at #3, NCAA March Madness Live at #4, Gemini at #5, and ESPN Tournament Challenge at #6. Comet is still in the top 10 at #9.
Following Anthropic’s stand against the U.S. Department of Defense (or War, as they currently prefer to be called), Claude briefly reached #1 after starting the year at #42. The increased exposure has kept it in the top three.
Prior to March Madness and sports apps defeating AI, the top three chatbot apps briefly competed with a hamburger promotion.

Ultimately, free food couldn’t do what sports has done in unseating AI.
Meanwhile, Apple has similarly embraced March Madness, adding brackets to Apple Sports in time for this week. Apple Sports also saw record downloads during Apple’s first F1 race weekend on Apple TV.
