HomeKit Weekly: Why the Eve Aqua is a better choice than a permanent irrigation system

Why This Matters

The Eve Aqua offers a flexible, maintenance-free alternative to permanent irrigation systems, making it ideal for seasonal or temporary watering needs. Its integration with Apple HomeKit allows users to automate and remotely control watering schedules, ensuring healthy plants during hot summers or vacations. This product highlights the growing trend towards smart, user-friendly outdoor gardening solutions that cater to both convenience and efficiency.

Key Takeaways

It is spring 2026, and that magical time of year when the sun is shining, the grass is growing, and flowers bloom. We are heading into near-perfect weather. Spring in the southern US generally brings plenty of showers. It will not be long until the brutal summer heat arrives, with 97 degrees, 90% humidity, full sun, and no rain in the forecast.

Winning against the brutal summer heat with your plants requires a strong foundation right now, and getting them plenty of water consistently is the absolute key to survival. I have generally opposed professionally installed irrigation systems due to the upkeep required. I have long used the Eve Aqua instead. It is a great way to quickly deploy a maintenance-free, Apple Home-enabled sprinkler system.

HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apple’s smart home framework.

I have found this product to be a lifesaver when you head on vacation with no one available to check on your plants and water them. As hot as the summers get here in the southern US, a week without rain or being watered can take plants from healthy to struggling very quickly if you don’t water them at all.

How does it work?

Unlike a professionally installed irrigation system, this product sits between your outdoor faucet and hose. You leave the spigot turned on. When the schedule triggers, it allows the water to flow. It is ideal for temporary watering situations like vacations or weeks without rain on the forecast. I always leverage it in fall after I overseed my grass and needed to water it multiple times a day for two weeks.

Eve Aqua uses two AA batteries. Eve has said that the batteries should last an entire watering season. During unboxing, you will see the included batteries and some accessories to help connect Eve Aqua to your outdoor faucet. Next, slide the bottom part of the unit out to install the batteries, then slide it back in. The only thing I would love to see in a future revision of this product is a move to USB-C charging and a built-in battery. I’d love to see Matter support in the future, but Thread is already supported.

Once you turn it on and power up, you will want to scan the HomeKit code. Because Eve Aqua is meant to stay outside, I highly advise keeping a copy of the code in Apple Notes or an app like Homepass. Depending on the manufacturing date of your unit, you may need to apply a firmware update in the Eve app. Usually, I do not particularly appreciate installing third-party vendor apps for smart home products. The Eve app is worth it, though, because it unlocks some nice automations.

Eve Aqua works with a standard 3/4 inch faucet, but an adaptor for a smaller hose is also included. If you run into issues with water leaking out the top, you will want to use the additional sealing ring that Eve includes in the box. After it is connected to your faucet, turn on the water from the tap, and you are ready to start. This is not a permanent installation. You have to run your hose and put your sprinkler where you want it in the yard or flower beds.
