Apple is today celebrating its 50th anniversary, and CEO Tim Cook has tweeted a fun video taking a trip back in time through 50 years of Apple products in a glitchy vintage TV style.
It follows a homepage animation on the company’s website entitled “50 Years of Thinking Different” and, in my view, would have made a better choice …
Cook has frequently said that Apple likes to look forward rather than back, but acknowledged that the 50th anniversary of the founding of the company was too big an occasion to go unmarked.
Exactly 50 years on from the day the company was founded, the Apple homepage has a colourful, understated animation representing some key Apple products. It’s cute, but is just a single animation with no accompanying microsite and in my view presents a rather underwhelming perspective.
What Cook has tweeted is a far more vivid video trip back in time showing actual product photos, and I find this a far more powerful representation of the company’s journey.
50 years of Apple, 50 years of innovation.
Thank you to our teams, our users, and everyone who’s been part of the journey. #Apple50 pic.twitter.com/YYkMN24Vzc — Tim Cook (@tim_cook) April 1, 2026
It begins with the MacBook Neo in 2026 and ends with the Apple I in 1976.
